Is one miracle enough to last a lifetime?
For those who have witnessed a miracle or deep religious experience unexplainable by normal means, do you feel that you wish for such things to continue, or is one miracle enough for a lifetime?
Some people pilgrimage to religious sites hoping to see another miracle. Do you feel like that?
I have had the good fortune to witness not one, but three, miracles … all of which occurred during the many years that I was an atheist. At that time, I did not see them for what they were, and filed these happenings away as those very strange things which occur from time to time. In hindsight, they were so bizarre, so life-changing and life-saving that — after many years of reflection and searching — I came to the only conclusion which made sense. Said conclusion being, the source of these happenings could have only been Divine.
Do I wish to experience another miracle? The selfish me says, “Yes!” Who wouldn’t want to experience something so grand, so profound as an unexpected life-changing event? It’s as if God, Himself taps you on the shoulder, whispers, “Over here,” sends you searching and then makes Himself known in ways you could never imagine. A witnessed miracle truly is an incredible thing.
However, the superstitious me fears being witness to another miraculous event. I believe with all my heart that the God I worship is a very kind, very loving, benevolent God … But sometimes, the ways in which He reveals Himself are spooky, and so I pray that — in wanting to witness another miracle– no adversity befalls my family.
After typing this out and giving it some thought, I suppose those miracles I’ve witnessed are enough to last a lifetime. I don’t need further proof that God exists, and will happily continue a relationship with Him through prayer.
